A cross between a Poodle and an Old English Sheepdog, Sheepadoodles are friendly, comical and playful pets! They are the class clown of the doodle world always finding new ways to bring life to their families! They are an amazing family dog with a sweet spirit. They love children and other animals. True to their heritage breed roots, they take on a guardian/hearding role seriously constantly monitoring the whereabouts of all living creatures in their home, big and small... Before you adopt on of our Sheepadoodle pups, it is a good idea to learn all their is to know about this wonderful breed. Below I have outlined some of the basics!
The Sheepadoodle is a designer breed that started as an expiremental military dog in the early 1960's. They were produced to provide a canine that was intelligent, keenly intuitive, loyal and brave. Not only are they all of that, but are also carefeee clowns with a wonderful playful temperament. As with other doodle breeds, they were designed to be hypoallergenic with low to no shedding for people who have allergies and want a lower maintenance shed rate.
The Sheepadoodles come in three different sizes. Mini (25-45lbs), Moyan/medium (45-65lbs) and Standard (60-85+lbs).
Sheepadoodles have a soft fluffy coat. Since both heritage breeds are non shedding and have full furnishings (the genetic element that causes long facial hair and beard), Sheepadoodles have a full face giving them the popular "Teddy Bear " look that fans have come to know and love.
As with mast larger breed dogs, Sheepadoodles have a life span of typically 12-15 years. The smaller sizes tend to live on average 1-3 years longer than its larger counter part.
Sheepadoodles are derived from a herding breed and Avian Retriever. As such, the herding breed in them is very driven and they can sometimes be known for Playfully nipping at active children. This phase is what owners have labeled the "Sharkadoodle" phase! This is typically curved by consistent redirection and training by their owners and most times is completely resolved with age.
Due to their natural ability to read emotions, they often times make a great choice for an emotional support or therapy pet. They get along well with other animals if introduced early. They thrive on connection and do not do well if left alone for long periods of time.
As with all puppies Socialization is foundational in the development in a good temperament.
The Sheepadoodle is a highly intuitive and very intelligent dog. With knowledge and consistency, you will find they are very motivated to please making them a very trainable breed. Because of this, the sheepadoodle makes a perfect choice for a therapy pet.
It is important in early years to have a schedule for them to follow makes their routine predictable and reinforces what is expected of them. Obedience training should be done in 5-10 minute increments a couple times a day for the first couple months. It is always recommended to reach out to a local training program to do "Puppy Kindergarten" or equivalent. This will not only teach you and puppy to communicate and bond, but put you in touch with the canine community for ongoing support.
Sheepadoodles are a highly active doodle breed. They do wonderful with active individuals or families that will enjoy making them part of their every day lives. It is recommended to walk a sheepadoodle once or twice a day or allow for yard play to exercise excess energy. It is also advisable to have a variety of toys and games to keep you puppy busy to avoid any destructive tendencies that come with any dog. Toys and games will help to keep your Sheepadoodle busy and avoid any destructive tendencies that occur with any bored dog.
Sheepadoodles can live in a variety of environments from apartment living to country If living in smaller quarters, you will need to be able to spend more time walking your dog because they have a natural love for outdoors.
As puppies, this breed will be playful one moment and sleeping the next. It is important to avoid allowing them to jump on and off surfaces frequently because they can obtain joint injuries secondary to their size and quick growth.
It is advised to give them a good vitamin mineral supplement that has a formula for bone and joint health. I recommend NuVet and NuJoint supplements www.nuvet.com/669531/. The supplement should be combined with a high protein large breed formula dog food.
When it comes to Sheepadoodles, they are a non-shedding full coat breed. Most Sheepadoodles have a slight wave to their fur but some may have the look of large curly locks. Frequency of brushing is highly dependent on the length of coat you choose to keep on your sheepadoodle. Brushing should be done a minimum of 2-3 times a week to avoid matting using a wire comb at the skin and a slicker brush to finish.
Frequency of full grooming depends on the owners desired look. The full groom can be required anywhere from every 1-3 months. With full grooming, the ears should be cleaned and toe nails cut back. Also teeth should be evaluated for plaque buildup and weekly care should include an ear cleaner to help with wax build up and infection prevention.
